TENSES ( BAB I )
I. TEORI
Tenses berhubungan dengan time atau waktu. Secara umum, tenses dibagi menjadi 3 bagian besar :
- Present
- Past
- Future
Untuk menghadapi Ujian Nasional, tenses yang akan dibahas adalah :
- Simple Present Tense
- Present Continuous Tense
- Present Perfect Tense
- Present Perfect Continuous Tense
- Simple Past Tense
- Past Continuous Tense
- Simple Future Tense
| 1. Simple Present Tense |  |
a. Habitual
Kita membahas tentang suatu kegiatan yang dilakukan secara rutin untuk suatu periode tertentu.

S = Subject
V1 = Verb infinitive
Contoh :
- I go to school everyday.
- They come here once a week.
Untuk subjek He, She, It, jangan lupa ada penambahan s atau es pada kata kerjanya.
Contoh :
- He goes to school everyday.
- Mrs. Sofniza arrives at home from the office at 6 p. m .
Untuk kalimat negatif, tambahkan do not atau does not, diikuti oleh kata kerja bentuk pertama, sedangkan untuk kalimat tanya, pindahkan do atau does kedepan kalimat.
Contoh :
( +) They study English everyday.
( - ) They don’t study English everyday.
( ? ) Do they study English everyday ?
- Yes, she does.
- No, they don’t.
Contoh :
( + ) Dila plays Table Tennis everyday.
( - ) Dila doesn’t play Table Tennis everyday.
( ? ) Does Dila play Table Tennis everyday ?
- Yes, she does.
- No, she doesn’t.
b. Faktual
Kita membicarakan tentang kebenaran umum.
Contoh :
( + ) The sun rises in the East.
( - ) The sun doesn’t rise in the West.
( ? ) Does the sun rise in the East.
Yes, it does.
Yang perlu diingat, keterangan waktu yang sering dipakai adalah :Everyday, Everytime, Everyweek.
Kita juga bisa menambahkan Adverbs of Frequency : always (selalu), usually (biasanya), often (sering), sometimes (kadang-kadang), seldom (jarang), never (tidak pernah).
Contoh :
- All never comes here.
- Susi and Dewi always type a report everyday.
2. Present Continuous Tense
Tense ini membicarakan tentang kegiatan yang sering dilakukan.
Contoh :
A : What are you doing ?
B : I am writing a latter.

Keterandgan waktu yang sering digunakan adalah now, at this moment, at present, look,listen.
- Untuk kalimat negatif, tambahkan not setelah to be ( is, am, are ).
- Untuk kalimat tanya, pindahkan is, am, are kedepan kalimat.
Contoh :
( + ) We are reading a book now.
( - ) We are not reading a book now.
( ? ) Are we readinga book now ?
- Yes, we are.
- No, we are not.
3. Present Perfect Tense
Membicarakan suatu kegiatan di waktu lampau yang berhubungan dengan present (sekarang).
Contoh :
- Mrs. Salma has lived in
- They have finished their job.

Keterangan waktu : since (sejak), for (selama), already (telah), yet (belum), recently (akhir-akhir ini), so far (sejauh ini), once (sekali), twice (dua kali).
- Untuk kalimat negatif, tambahkan not setelah has atau have.
- Untuk Kalimat tanya, pindahkan have atau has ke depan kalimat.
Contoh :
( + ) Mr. Sofyan has gone to Bukit Tinggi already.
( - ) Mr. Sofyan has not gone to Bukit Tinggi yet.
( ? ) Has Mr. Sofyan gone to Bukit Tinggi ?
Yes, he has.
No, he has not.
4. Present Prefect Continuous Tense
Contoh :
- Mrs. Chadijah has been swimming since 2 o’clock.

Keterangan waktu : for, since.
- Untuk kalimat negatif, tambahkan not setelah has atau have.
- Untuk kalimat tanya, pindahkan have atau has ke depan kalimat.
Contoh :
( + ) Abdulah has been running for 30 minutes.
( - ) Abdulah has not been running for 30 minutes.
( ? ) Has Abdulah been running for 30 minutes ?
- Yes, he has.
- No, he has not.
5. Simple Past Tense
Menerangkan kejadian di masa lampau.
Contoh :
- Mike walked to school yesterday.
- Upik worked hard last week.
- I was happy 2 day ago.

Keterangan waktu : yesterday, last week, last month, 2 days ago, just now (barusan), in 1987.
- Untuk kalimat negatif, gunakan did not + V1, atau tambahkan not setelah was / were.
- Untuk kalimat tanya , pindahkan did atau was / hare ke depan kalimat.
Contoh :
a. ( + ) Mr. Toto sang a song last week.
( - ) Mr. Toto didn’t sing a song last week.
( ? ) Did Mr. Toto sing asong last week ?
- Yes, he did.
- No, he did not.
b. ( + ) Mrs. Elisabeth was hare yesterday.
( - ) Mrs. Elisabeth was not here yesterday.
( ? ) Was Mrs. Elisabeth here yesterday ?
- Yes, she was.
- No, she was not.
6. Past Continuous Tense
a. Menerangkan suatu kegiatan yang sedang berlangsung di waktu lampau, kemudian ada kejadian lain yang terjadi.
Contoh :
I was reading a book when my mother called me up.
b. Menerangkan 2 kejadian yang sedang terjadi bersamaan di waktu lampau.

- Untuk kalimat negatif, tambahkan not setelah was / were.
- Untuk kalimat tanya, pindahkan was / were ke depan kalimat.

7. Simple Future Tense

Menerangkan suatu peristiwa yang baru akan berlangsung.
Contoh :
v He will come here tomorrow.
v He is going to come here tomorrow.
Keterangan waktu : tomorrow, next week, next time.
· Untuk kalimat negatif, tambahkan not setelah will, atau setelah be ( is, am, are ).
· Untuk kalimat tanya, pindahkan will atau be ( is, am, are ) ke depan kalimat.
Contoh :
a. ( + ) They will play Footbal tomorrow.
( - ) They will not play Footbal tomorrow.
( ? ) Will they play Footbal tomorrow.
- Yes, they will.
- No, they won’t.

Question words adalah prtanyaan yang menanyakan informasi, misalnya who ( siapa ), where (kemana / dimana ).
Quistion words yang sering dipakai digunakan dalam bahasa Inggris adalah :
a. - Who = untuk orang ( subjek ). h. How old = berapa usia
- Whom = untuk orang ( obyek ). Contoh : Contoh : How old are you now ?
· Who came here yesterday ? I am sixteen.

I. TEORI
Expression of quantity adalah ungkapan yang digunakan untuk menunjukan jumlah suatu benda yang dapat dihitung ( countable noun ) dan benda yang tidak dapat dihitung ( uncountable noun ).
Jenis – jenis expresion of quantity yang sering digunakan adalah :
1. Much dan many ( banyak ).
Much digunakan untuk uncountable, sedangkan many digunakan untuk countable noun.
Contoh :
- Mr. Taufik buys much sugar and many books
2. A little dan a few ( sedikit ).
A little / little digunakan uncountable noun, sedangkan a few / few digunakan untuk countable noun.
Contoh :
- I have a little tea and a few pens.
3. A number of dan number of
A number of artinya sejumlah, sedangkan the number of artinya jumlah. Mereka diikuti oleh kata benda countable.
Contoh :
- A number of students are studying in that room now ( sejumlah murid sedang belajar di ruang itu sekarang )
- The number of students is 30 ( jumlah muridnya 30 ).
4. Some and any ( beberapa ).
Some digunakan untuk kalimat positif, sedangkan any digunakan untuk kalimat negatif. Mereka bisa diikuti oleh kata benda countable dan uncountable.

I. TEORI
Question Tag adalah suatu pertanyaan di akhir kalimat yang fungsinya untuk meyakinkan suatu informasi. Jika pertanyaan yang di ungkapkan dalam bentuk kalimat positif, maka tag – nya harus negatif. Sebaliknya, jika pertanyaannya dalam bentuk negatif, maka tag – nya harus positif.

Elliptical Structure adalah penghilangan bagian tertentu dari suatu kalimat akibat penggabungan dengan kalimat lain pada saat membentuk kalimat majemuk. Penghilangan bagian tertentu tersebut tidak menyebabkan perubahan arti pada kalimat.
Seperti kita ketahui, ada 4 macam auxiliary verb ( kata kerja bantu ) :
